NORTHUMBERLAND’S HIDDEN HISTORY, by Stan Beckensall. Published by Amberley, Chalford, Stroud GL6 8PE (www.amberley-books.com). £16.99. Softback.

IN his new book, this specialist archaeologist, historian and prolific local author focuses on places that are off the beaten track, scattered across the county in the hills, valleys, scarplands and along the coast.
Sites featured include places off the ‘Alemouth Road’ from Hexham to Alnmouth such as the old township of Thockrington, hidden valleys and waterfalls at Linhope Spout, Roughting Linn and Hareshaw Linn. He also includes seascapes, abandoned settlements and industrial sites including lead mining works and a coalfield, as well as pilgrimage routes and old stagecoach roads, prehistoric enclosures and the remarkable rock formations that make up much of the landscape.
The author explored trackways which led to little-known places, some remote and unvisited, as well as visiting other highly visible features with a hidden history.
