THE REIVERS’ WAY, by Paddy Dillon. Published by Cicerone Press, Milnthorpe, Cumbria (tel: 015395-62069). £10. Softback.

HERE is a very useful pocket-sized guidebook for anyone planning to follow all or part of the 150-mile route of this ‘unofficial’ long-distance trail. It starts at Corbridge, crosses Hexhamshire Common in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, follows part of Hadrian’s Wall, then travels through Wark, Elsdon and Rothbury before crossing the Cheviot Hills on the way to Wooler and Northumberland’s Heritage Coast between Bamburgh and Alnmouth.
Apart from offering suggested daily walk schedules, which range in length from 11 to 20 for those aiming to complete the trail in nine days, there are detailed route summaries and sketch maps, an accommodation list and notes on historical landmarks, geology, scenery and wildlife to be encountered along the Reivers’ Way.
