UNIQUE images from the archives of Historic England are featured in this book, which provides a nostalgic look at the city’s past and highlights the special character of some of its most important historic sites.
The city is shown as it once was, from its streets and alleys to its famous shipyards and iconic river bridges. Buildings featured range from the Norman Black Gate, the Moot Hall, the 16th century Cooperage and the 18th century Customs House on the Quayside to an 1882 photograph of Fenwick’s original department store and a 1927 picture of St James’ Park football ground.
